Lebanon—James R. Sullivan, 89, died Friday, March 22, 2013 at Cornwall Manor. He was the husband of the late Jane (Hilty) Sullivan to whom he was married for 49 ½ years. A Celebration of Life Tribute will be 11 AM, Thursday March 28, 2013 in Zerr Chapel at Cornwall Manor, 1 Boyd St., Cornwall with Chaplain Glen Esler officiating. A visitation will be held from 10-11 AM, Thursday, at Zerr Chapel. Burial will be held Thursday at 1:30 PM in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd, York is in charge of arrangements. Born January 24, 1924 in Morristown, New Jersey, he was the son of the late James and Charlotte I. (Garabrant) Sullivan. A 1942 graduate of Morristown High School, he earned his under graduate degree from Gettysburg College in 1947 where he graduated Cum Laude. He later graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Pennsylvania with a Master’s Degree in history. He started his 32 year career with the National Park Service in 1949 as a Park Ranger at Colonial National Historical Park in Yorktown, VA and later became Assistant Superintendent at Independence National Park in Philadelphia. His career eventually came full circle in 1981 retiring from Colonial National Historical Park as park Superintendent. After his retirement he worked as Director of Operations for 10 years at the Mariners Museum in Newport News, VA. A United States Army Veteran of World War II, he attended Zerr Chapel at Cornwall Manor and was a former member of Zion Lutheran Church in York, where he was active on the church council. He was a member of the Free & Accepted Masons Prospect Lodge #24 in New Jersey and a former member of the property committee at Lutheran Social Services. Mr. Sullivan is survived by one son, William R. Sullivan and wife, Tamar of Lebanon; two grandchildren, Brent A. Sullivan of Washington, D.C. and Paige C. Sullivan of Wayne and one cousin, Catherine Spaan of Virginia. He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Katie E. Sullivan; father and mother –in- law, Merill R. and Carolyn (Cook) Hilty and loving companion, Janet Barnes. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Zerr Chapel at Cornwall Manor, Attn: Chaplain Glen Esler, P.O. Box 125, 1 Boyd Street, Cornwall, Pa 17046.
