James L. Place

POTTSVILLE- James L. Place, 95, formerly of Sinking Spring and West Market Street, Pottsville, passed away Monday morning at Villa St. Elizabeth, Reading, where he was a resident for two and a half years. Born in Niagara on the Lake, Ontario, Canada, he was a son of the late James Ernest and Lydia Thomas Place. James was a Master Sergeant in the United States Army during World War II having served with the 134th Anti Aircraft Battalion. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Outstanding Dedication and Bravery medal. James worked for 46 years for Penn Live Service, retiring as a foreman for the tree clearance and line construction company. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, of both Schuylkill and Berks counties. He was a former member of the former Saint Joseph Church, Pottsville. In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Rose Barone Place, who passed away March 29, 1988; his two brothers, Thomas Beadle Place and John Ashworth Place; his two sisters, Edith Victoria Place and Mary Place Boyer. James is survived by his son, James Barone Place, husband of Margaret M., of Sinking Spring, PA; his daughter, Rosemary Place Martin, wife of James Martin, of Sinking Spring, PA; his Grandchildren, Margaret Anne Place, of Wayne, PA, Matthew J. Martin, Specialist E-4/SPC , husband of Angela Bruno Martin, of Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and Kathleen R. Martin, of Sinking Spring, PA; his Great Granddaughter, Madison Rose Martin; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Saturday morning at 11:00 A.M. at Schlitzer-Allen-Pugh Funeral Home, Inc., 6th & West Market Streets, Pottsville, PA 17901. Family and friends may call on Saturday morning from 10:00 A.M. until time of the service at the funeral home. Interment with Military Honors will be held in Saint Joseph’s Cemetery, Hillside, Pottsville. Online condolences may be sent bestlifetributes.com.
