WELLSBURG, NY-James K. Spencer Age 69, of 697 Main Street, Chemung, NY went to be with his Lord on Thursday, May 31, 2007 at Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, PA following a courageous battle with cancer. Jim was born September 3, 1937 in Osceola, PA son of the late James C. and Eleanor Carpenter Spencer. Following High School he served his country with the US Navy and later received his Associates Degree from Tompkins Cortland Community College. He was married on May 15, 1959 to the former Russetta J. Newman. Jim's career in Law Enforcement began with the New York State Police he was a Trooper with "Troop C" in Ithaca, New York until his retirement in 1982. He then worked, as a Senior Fraud Investigator for the Tioga County Department of Social Services was a Contract Deputy for the Chemung County Sheriff's Department, he served as Town Justice for the Town of Chemung and was an Agent for the U.S. Marshall's Service. Jim was dedicated individual who loved his family and community very much. His memberships included the Chemung United Methodist Church where he served a Treasurer, Cub and Boy Scout Leader, Chairman of the Ithaca Fresh Air Fund; he coached Kiwanis and Babe Ruth Baseball and also published several articles and a book on Civil War Generals. Jim was presented with the "Trooper of the Year Award" from "Troop C" Ithaca, NY, which he was very proud of. Survivors include his loving with Russetta J. Spencer of Chemung, NY, his daughter and son-in-law, Nina & Tom Walden of Virgil, NY, sons and daughters-in-law, James D. & Sheila Spencer of Chemung, NY, Joseph C. & Becky Spencer of Chemung, NY, his sister, Ellen & Tom Smith of Tulsa, OK, a brother Terry & Bonnie Spencer of Knoxville, PA, nine grandchildren, three great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. His parents and a sister Roxene Spencer predeceased Jim. Family and friends are invited to call Monday, June 4, 2007 from 4 PM to 6 PM at the Roberts Funeral Home, Inc. 279 Main Street, Wellsburg, NY. Funeral Services will be held at the conclusion of calling hours at 6 PM with Reverend Dan Burgess of the Chemung United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be held Tuesday, June 5, 2007 at 11 AM in Chemung Cemetery with full military honors. Memorials are directed to the Chemung United Methodist Church, Box 248, Chemung, NY 14825 or to the American Society, 1316 College Ave. Elmira, NY 14901.
