LOWER WINDSOR – James E. Hooper, 83, passed away Friday, January 31, 2025 at his residence after a brief illness. He was the husband of Joyce E. (Bixler) Hooper to whom he was married for 21 years.

A Celebration of Life Tribute Service will be held 2:00 PM, Saturday, February 22, 2025 at Olewiler and Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., Red Lion. There will be a visitation from 1:00-2:00 PM at the funeral home. Attendants are encouraged to come dressed in their hiking gear. 

Born 1941 in Darby, PA, he was a son of the late Vice Admiral Edwin B. and Elizabeth (Patrick) Hooper. After obtaining a Physics Degree from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Mr. Hooper served in the United States Army’s Signal Corp . He served two years active duty and seven years in the Army Reserve, reaching the rank of Captain. He obtained his Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from Syracuse University and spent most of his professional career working in the defense industry. He also served as past Chairman of the Susquehanna Section of IEEE (Institute of Electrical Electronics Engineers) . 

Outside of his work, Jim was devoted to nature and a committed hiker. He was a tireless advocate for development of the Mason Dixon Trail and was instrumental in its development and maintenance. His past non profit appointments included Chairman of the Adirondack Mountain Club Search & Rescue Team , President of The York Hiking Club, President of the Mason Dixon Trail Association. He was also a past representative with the Appalachian Trail Conference and Keystone Trail Associations.

His passions in life included family gatherings, preserving native lands, building trails, working on his farm and woodworking. He had also section hiked the entire Appalachian Trail and was an avid history buff.

In addition to his loving wife, Joyce, he is also survived by his two sons, Patrick Hooper and his wife Tara of Hellam and Adam Hooper and his wife Megan of Quinton, VA; six grandchildren, Brooke Hooper-Attig and her husband Alex, Nick Hooper, Zoe Hooper, Andy Minteer, Ty Minteer, and River Hooper; as well as a brother, Bickford Hooper and his wife Ginny. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Dr. Marian Condon with whom he kept a cordial relationship. He is preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Hooper and William “Bill” Hooper.
