GAITHERSBURG, MD- James H. Vogelsong, 89, formerly of York, died on Thursday, January 8, 2015 at Holy Cross Hospital in Germantown, MD. He was the husband of Doris M. (Kehr) Vogelsong, to whom he was married for 65 years. A celebration of life tribute service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 15, 2015 at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd., York with Certified Celebrant Betty Frey officiating. A viewing will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery. A reception will follow. Born on October 30, 1925 in York, he was a son of the late Thomas and Ruth (Howard) Vogelsong. James was a 1943 graduate of William Penn High School. Mr. Vogelsong went on to serve our country in the United States Army Air Corps during WWII. He then graduated Phi Beta Kappa with honors in Engineering from Lehigh University in 1949. He also received a Master’s Degree in Mathematics from Rutgers University in 1961. James worked as an Electrical Engineer for Bell Telephone Laboratories in New Jersey, Illinois and Allentown, PA until his retirement in 1986. After retirement, he began volunteering at the information desk at the Iacocca Building at Lehigh University. Mr. Vogelsong was a talented athlete; he played baseball for the York Pirates and was an avid tennis player into his 80’s. He also enjoyed reading, especially history books and had a long interest in the civil war. He was an active member of the Civil War Round Table of Eastern PA. James enjoyed participating in many Lehigh University alumni activities. Along with his wife, Doris, James is survived by one son, Thomas L. Vogelsong of Lawrenceville, NJ; one daughter, Diana Vogelsong (Wallace C. Duncan) of Derwood, MD; four grandchildren, Matthew Duncan (Adrienne), Andrea Lauber (Christopher), Melissa Vogelsong and Michael Vogelsong; one great granddaughter, Nyomi Eve Duncan; two sisters in law, Doris J. Vogelsong of Martinsville, VA and Mildred Kehr of York; and one brother in law, Willard Kehr of York. He was preceded in death by one brother, Donald Vogelsong.
