James Douglas Massam

YORK- James Douglas Massam, 78, died on Wednesday, January 10, 2024 at York Hospital. He was the husband of Deborah Ann (Ruby) Massam to whom he was married for 57 years and together for 63 years.

A celebration of life tribute service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 17, 2024 at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd., York with Pastor Thomas McKee officiating. A viewing will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery with full military honors provided by the York County Veterans Honor Guard.

Born on September 20, 1945 in York, he was the son of the late David Albert and Nora (Himes) Massam. James was a welder at the former York International and Borg Warner for 42 years until his retirement.

Mr. Massam was a member at Grace Lutheran Church in York and a member of the Vigilant Fire Company and Vigilant Social Club. At William Penn High School he was a 3X State Champion Swimmer in the backstroke and a 3X All-American.

Mr. Massam went on to serve our country in the U.S. Navy for two years and eleven months during the Vietnam War where he was also a member of the swim team. He later enjoyed coaching youth baseball and coaching swimming for the Boy’s Club of York.

Along with his wife, Deborah, James is survived by two sons, Todd Massam and his wife, Megan of Thomasville and Troy Massam and his wife, Yolonda of York; three grandchildren, Makayla Massam, Jordan Massam and Taylor Massam; and great grandson, Xavier Massam. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Austin Massam.
