James A. Monaghan

POTTSVILLE - James Anthony Monaghan, 90, of Pottsville, died peacefully, surrounded by his family, Friday evening at the Schuylkill Center, Pottsville. Born in Girardville on September 19, 1920, he was a son of the late Dominick J. and Nellie B. Carey Monaghan. He was a 1938 graduate of St. Joseph High School. James was a veteran of the Navy during World War II, serving aboard the LST 911. His tours of duty included New Guinea, Philippines, Sumatra, Java and Borneo. James was the president and owner of Carbonite Filter Corporation, Delano, PA. He was also a sales manager for George E. Warren, Boston Mass., Hammond Coal Co., Reading Anthracite Co. and Leon Kocher Coal Co. He was a member of the Church of Saint Patrick, Pottsville. He was a 3rd degree Knight in the Father Sheridan Council of the Knights of Columbus, Girardville. James was a UCP board member and coordinated the UCP horse shows for many years. He was a member of the Friends and Family Group of White Haven Center in White Haven, PA. He was a lifetime member of the American Water Works Association. He was also a member of the PA Anthracite Council and a local member of the Society of Mining Engineers and the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers. He was a pioneer in the production of Anthracite Filter media used for water treatment and purification and his products are distributed worldwide. Surviving James in addition to his wife Dorothy to whom he married on May 26, 1956: a son, Brian J. Monaghan and his wife Donna; two daughters, Pamela married to Richard Leymeister and Shelia married to Argie Tidmore; four grandchildren, Sara Leymeister, Eric Leymeister, Haley Tidmore and Zoe Tidmore. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Carey Monaghan in 2009. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday morning at 11 AM from the Church of Saint Patrick, 4th & Mahantongo St., Pottsville. Family and friends may call from the Schlitzer Allen Pugh Funeral Home, Inc., 6th & W. Market St., Pottsville from 9 AM until time of mass. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Pottsville. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the St. Patricks Memorial Fund, 319 Mahantongo St., Pottsville, PA 17901.
