Jack Hess

YORK- Jack Hess, 92, loving husband of Charlotte M. Hess for 70 years, passed into God's loving arms on Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2016. Born Sept. 30, 1924, Jack was the son of the late Emily Fry and Gordon Hess. A seaman first class in the U.S. Navy who proudly served his country aboard the U.S.S. San Jacinto aircraft carrier during WWII, he was honorably discharged in 1945. After attending business college, he was a career accountant and retired from Dentsply International in 1986 after 25 years with the company. Jack was a kind, gentle and devoted family man who had an infectious sense of humor. He was athletic and a great sportsman who taught his daughters how to play ping pong, tennis and other competitive sports. He was a skilled checkers champ who enjoyed a good game into the final months of his life. Jack also was a big fan of Walt Disney World and visited the theme parks each year through 2015 with Charlotte. In addition to Charlotte, Jack is survived by his three daughters, Jennie Hess and her husband, Walter Benjamin, of Orlando, Fla., Cheryl Oare and her husband Rich Raines, of Lancaster, Pa., and Alison Davis and her husband, Earl Davis, of York; grandsons Nathan and Sam Benjamin of Orlando, and granddaughters Lauren Oare of Myrtle Beach, N.C., and Michaela Davis of York; and Winfield Paules, brother-in-law, and his wife, June, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. A memorial service in celebration of Jack's life will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, Nov. 26, 2016, at Faith United Church of Christ, 509 Pacific Ave., York, with Pastor Ron Oelrich officiating. Guests attending the service are encouraged to dress in colors or themes that convey joy and arrive at 1:30 PM. Full military honors will be provided by the York County Veterans Honor Guard beginning at 2 PM. Inurnment will be private at Greenmount Cemetery. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road, York, is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory can be made to Faith United Church of Christ, 509 Pacific Avenue, York, PA 17404, or to the Alzheimer's Association Greater PA Chapter, 2595 Interstate Dr., Harrisburg, PA 17110.
