RENOVO - Jack E. “Puppy” Shaffer, 86, died Tuesday, December 20, 2016 at Bucktail Medical Center, Renovo. He was born on November 17, 1930 in North Bend and was the son of the late Jack S. and Violet (Hollingsworth) Shaffer. On August 15, 1954, Jack married Barbara S. (Inns), who survives and they celebrated their 62nd anniversary this year. Jack was a graduate of Renovo Area High School Class of 1948. He went on to serve his country proudly in the United States Coast Guard and was honorably discharged in 1954. Jack then attended Lock Haven Teacher’s College and earned his bachelor’s degree in secondary education in 1956. He moved to Buffalo, New York in 1956 and worked for Bell Aircraft of Buffalo. While working he attended the University of Buffalo and earned his master’s equivalency degree in 1958. He worked for Maryville High School as a teacher until 1961 and then moved back to Renovo. Jack took a job with Renovo High School and he worked there until 1986 and retired after working 28 years as an educator. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Renovo, Social member of Sons of Italy, Renovo and former member of Elks Club, Renovo and served on the board of directors at the Renovo Library. Jack loved his community and could be found at many of the local area high school sporting events. He enjoyed watching football on TV, hunting, fishing, camping, traveling all over the United States with Barb in their camper, playing poker and euchre, doing crossword puzzles and visiting casinos in Las Vegas and Salamanca, New York. In addition to his wife, Jack is survived by one son; Robert T. Shaffer of Williamsport, two daughters and one son-in-law; Cynthia and Gordon Spotts of Williamsport and Christine Claar of Tyrone, six grandchildren; Allyson, Rome, Nicholas, Lindsey, Christopher and Madeline, one sister and brother-in-law; Orpha J. and William Wilson of Panama City, Florida along with numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by two brothers; Quentin and Kenneth Shaffer and one sister; Rhea Shaffer Ward. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either Bucktail Medical Center, Renovo Library or to the REC Center, Renovo. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are being handled by Maxwell Funeral Home, 205 Fifth Street, Renovo.
