Ida Cathryn (Schaffer) Messersmith

WEST YORK BORO- Ida Cathryn (Schaffer) Messersmith, 83, died Thursday, June 28, 2012 at her residence. She was the wife of the late John Cameron Messersmith. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, July 2, 2012 at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd. in York, with a visitation from 1-2 p.m. Pastor Ron Oelrich will be officiating at the service. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery. Mrs. Messersmith was born in Wheeler, Texas on December 2, 1928, daughter of the late Mack Harvey and Nora Cathryn (Stock) Schaffer. She volunteered for the Red Cross for many years where she was a swim instructor and taught breast cancer recovery classes. She was also a volunteer for YWCA and Jewish Community Center. She was a member of the former Bethany United Church of Christ, now Faith United Church of Christ and was a member of the Knitters Guild, West York VFW post 8951 Ladies Auxiliary, and worked for the Election Bureau in West York. Mrs. Messersmith leaves a son, John D. Messersmith and his wife Carolyn of Sunrise, FL; four grandchildren; Heather Jo Wevodau Carabin, Amanda Jo Wevodau Persing, Linda Elizabeth Messersmith, and John Daniel Messersmith; a brother, Walter Schaffer of Strinestown; a sister, Naomi E. Snellbaker of Herndon, VA; and a son-in-law, Daniel Eugene Wevodau. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Wevodau; a son, A. Andrew Messersmith; and a brother, Curvin Schaffer.
