YORK – Howard D. “Mike” Hess, Jr., 78, passed away Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at ManorCare North Nursing Facility. He was the husband of Norma J. (Keesey) Hess to whom he was married 54 years. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 PM on Wednesday, November 30 at Heffner Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road, York. A viewing will be from 1-2 PM Wednesday at the funeral chapel. Burial will be private at the request of the family. Mr. Hess was born on March 29, 1933 in Pequa Twp. in Lancaster County. He was the only child of the late Howard K. and Elizabeth (Dombach) Hess. He worked for Metso Corporation in the shipping department for 38 years. Mr. Hess was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in York. Mr. Hess was a life member of the Viking Athletic Association, a life member and president of Liberty Firemans Social Club, a member of American Legion Post 28 in Millsboro, DE., president of the North York Borough Council, a past member of North York Hunting Camp, the past president of Liberty Fire Company, and the former mayor of North York. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. Mr. Hess served our country in the US Army during the Korean War. In addition to his wife, Mr. Hess is survived by a sister-in-law, Barbara (Keesey) Garrett; a nephew Scott A. Garrett and wife Amy; and a beloved great-niece Ava Garret all of which reside in Ponce Inlet, FL. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Liberty Fire Co.
