YORK Howard C. Barney Barnhart, Jr., 83, of York Twp., died at 5:30 pm Saturday, January 1, 2011, in Manchester at the home of his long-time and loyal friend, Helen J. Lehman, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born March, 1927 in York, he was the son of the late Howard C. and Nona (Daugherty) Barnhart. He retired from the York City School District, having taught Civics, Social Studies and Business for 30 years at Edgar Fahs Smith Middle School, and William Penn Senior High School. After retirement, he served on the Homebound teaching program for the York City School District and was a former associate of Heffner Funeral Chapels and Crematory. A 1947 graduate of William Penn High School where he played football and basketball, he attended York Junior College where he served as President of Mu Etta Kappa Fraternity. In 1955 he graduated from Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster with a B.S. degree in Economics and a minor in History; he was a member of the Alpha Delta Sigma Business Fraternity. Post graduate work was done at the University of Maryland, Penn State and Millersville Universities. He was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church, York having served on the Church Council, Usher Team, Senior Choir and as a Deacon. As a member of the Springettsbury Lions Club, he served as President, Vice President and Membership Chairman. He was also a member of the YCEA, PSEA, NEA and AARP. He served as Secretary of the former University Club of York and Treasurer of the York Teachers Credit Union. A World War II veteran, Mr. Barnhart served in the U.S. Navy as a Phm. 3/C. An avid golfer and bowler, he was also an avid music fan of Amadeus Mozart and Big Bands. In addition to his long-time and loyal friend, Helen J. Lehman, he also leaves his son, Scott Barnhart, and wife Elizabeth (Beth) of York; his daughter, Ann Duncan, and her husband, Todd of Frederick, MD; and three grandchildren, Nathan, Zachary and Megan Duncan of Frederick, Md. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Campbell and Carrie Platts. There will be no viewing. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at St. Pauls Lutheran Church, 25 Springettsbury Ave., York with his pastor, the Rev. Stanley D. Reep officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church. Private burial will be at Mt. Rose Cemetery with military honors by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
