Henri Henk Voorstad

YORK-Henri "Henk" Theodoor Voorstad, M.D., retired physician, died Thursday, April 3, 2008, at Normandie Ridge Senior Living Community, York. He was 80. Dr. Voorstad was born in Indonesia (formerly the Dutch East Indies), where he lived until 1945. During World War II, he was interned in a Japanese concentration camp on the island of Java for three years. Following the war, he moved to the Netherlands, where he completed his medical studies at the University of Leiden. Upon completing his studies, he did an internship at the Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Md., where he met his wife, Barbara, nee Buchele. They were married in the Netherlands in December, 1956. Dr. Voorstad served in the Dutch Navy for several years, including a year and a half in New Guinea. Dr. Voorstad moved with his wife and four children to the Baltimore, Md., area in 1965, where he lived for 42 years. After completing his residency training in Internal Medicine at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center in 1968, he practiced Internal Medicine in private practice for 27 years. He moved with his wife to Normandie Ridge in 2007. In addition to his interest in medicine, Dr. Voorstad enjoyed foreign languages (he was proficient in several) and travel, sailing and classical music. In addition to his wife in 51 years, Dr. Voorstad is survived by three daughters, P. Josee O'Shannessy of Schwenksville, Francine S. Graillot-Holman of Baltimore, and Nancy Marisa Maravi of Clarksville, Md.; a son, Theodoor (Ted) A. Voorstad, M.D. of Dover; and nine grandchildren. A private cremation service was held in York. A memorial service is planned for late May in Baltimore. In lieu of flowers, donations are welcome to the American Heart Association.
