Denville, NJ—Helen G. (Smith) Heidgerd, 86, formerly of York, died Thursday, April 23, 2015 at Franciscan Oaks Health Center in Denville, New Jersey. She was the wife of the late Robert H. Heidgerd to whom she was married for 52 years. A Celebration of Life Service will be June 6th at 11:00 AM at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 839 W. Market Street, York, Pennsylvania. Officiating the service will be the Rev. Kevin T. Shively. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd, York is in charge of arrangements. Born October 4, 1928 in Utica, New York, she was the daughter of the late Everdell G. and Isabelle B. (Cook) Smith. Helen graduated from Syracuse University with a bachelors degree in Home Economics and was a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority. She did graduate work at Penn State University to receive her teaching certification. She was a Home Economics teacher for twenty years at the Spring Grove Middle School. She was a member of St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran church, the York County Home Economists and the Shiloh Garden Club. She had life-long interests in sewing, crafting, travel and family activities. Mrs. Heidgerd is survived by two sons, John H. Heidgerd and his wife, Jean of Bridgewater, NJ and Paul W. Heidgerd and his wife, Diana of Dallas, TX; one daughter, Karen E. Lieberman and her husband, Fred of Chatham Twp, NJ; three grandchildren, Jaclyn M. Whittle, Kathryn M. Heidgerd and Eric J. Heidgerd and one brother, Robert E. Smith of Dallas, TX. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Brian J. Heidgerd and a sister, Elizabeth B. Brown. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church, York, Pennsylvania or the National Parkinson Foundation.
