YORK - Hazel I. Brown, 68, passed away Saturday, September 25, 2010 at Pleasant Acres Nursing Home. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, October 1, 2010 at Mt. Rose Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Sterling Walsh, Jr. officiating. Family and friends will meet at the entrance of the cemetery at 1:45 PM Friday. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road, York is in charge of arrangements. Born December 9, 1941 in Winchester, VA a daughter of the late Gladys M. (Bean) Howard, she had moved with her family to Hanover in 1956 where she attended Jr. and High School and was active in their Glee Club. Miss Brown waitressed in Hanover, Spring Grove, and York prior to moving to Columbus, OH where she managed a small restaurant and worked in a jewelry store for eight years. Before returning to York to help her mother in her restaurant business, Hazel worked at Moyco for nine years as a polisher. Hazel was an AARP member and also donated to Feed the Children. She was of Baptist faith and studied the Bible with a missionary in her early years. Hazel was very soft spoken and had a smile and kind word for everyone. She enjoyed going to yard sales, flea markets, and particularly enjoyed attending the South Mountain Apple Harvest Festival each October. Hazel is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Brown of York; a nephew, Rodney Brown of Arizona; seven cousins and their families in VA; a stepsister, Nettie V. Cummins of Potter Co.; and also her dog, Barkley. Memorial contributions may be made to Lighthouse Baptist Church, 5005 Carlisle Rd., Dover, PA 17315.
