Hartley Lawson Everts

TROY- Hartley Lawson Everts, 90, of "Farmers Valley," Troy, Pa., passed away on Tuesday morning, Oct. 28, 2008, at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa. Born on June 18, 1918, ion Berrytown, Pa., he was the son of the late Walter Bryron Everts and Emma "Agnes" (Lyon) Everts. He was a 1937 graduate of Troy High School. He served in the U.S. Army, Company E, 109th Infantry in World War II and was in the Battle of the Bulge until the end. He was awarded three Battle Stars for his actions in the Battles of Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. Hartley was an active member of the Troy American Legion Post No. 49, Troy VFW Post 8675 and Canton Moose Lodge No. 429 for more than 50 years. He was also a member of the Troy Grange for more than 60 years. Hartley received a certificate for being a registered voter for 50 years. He was baptized in 1944 and became a member of the First Baptist Church of Troy. After his discharge from the Army he was employed by the Troy Engine and Machine Co., F.P. Case and Sons, and the Farmer Union and ended his working career with more than 30 years with North Penn Gas Co., retiring in 1980. He married Esther P. (Elsbree) Everts on Aug. 21, 1943, in East Smithfield, Pa. They raised three sons, Paul (Linda), Byron and Randy (Marianne). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Paul (Denise) Everts Jr., Christine (Steve) Andrulonis, Tod (Natalie) Everts and Toby (Mia) Everts, and great-grandchildren, Brock Everts, Alex Everts and Megan Everts, as well as his brother-in-law, Lawrence Roloson, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Hartley was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Bernard; and his sisters, Edna VanAlstine and Genevieve Roloson. Family and friends are welcome to call from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1, at the First Baptist Church of Troy, 160 Canton St., Troy, Pa. The memorial service to honor Hartley's life will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday at the church with his pastor, the Rev. Garry Zuber, officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Glenwood Cemetery. The Gerald W. Vickery Jr. Funeral Home Inc., 110 W. Main St., Troy, Pa. has been entrusted with the arrangements. Contributions may be made in Hartley's name to the First Baptist Church of Troy, 160 Canton St., Troy, Pa. 16947.
