Harry Richard Lytle

STEWARTSTOWN – On the day of June 29, 2015 Harry Richard Lytle passed away in his home. He was the husband of Helen (Amspacher) Lytle and they celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary this year. He was 86 years old. Harry was born in White Hall, MD; son of the late Elmer W. and Ida (Baker) Lytle and one of eleven children. He spent the majority of his life living in Stewartstown where he was an invested member of the community. Harry served a short time in the Air Force before settling in Stewartstown. He became the local barber for 41 years, making many friends for whom he cut their hair even after closing his shop. His barbershop often served as a local hub for news and gossip. After barbering, he and his wife Helen owned Stewartstown Fuel Service as well as Lytle’s Gas and Diesel prior to retirement. Not only was he a well-established business owner, he was also a member of many organizations within the community. Harry joined the Shrewsbury Masonic Lodge #423, becoming a 32 degree Mason, as well as other Masonic organizations. This year he received his 60-year Masonic membership pin. He was also part of the PA Transportation Authority, was the past president of the Stewartstown Cemetery Assoc., served on the Stewartstown Town Council, a lifetime member of the Eureka Fire Co., member of Stewartstown VFW, Stewartstown Railroad, Southern York YMCA, Centre Presbyterian Church, and a very devoted member of the Stewartstown Mason Dixon Public Library. Harry’s proudest accomplishment was assisting the Mason Dixon Public Library with building a larger facility in Stewartstown. While serving on the Library Board of Directors, Harry also served on the Building Committee where he spent many hours planning, fundraising, seeking contributions to help pay for the new library, all while preferring to stay behind the scenes. He was active with both local and state politics as a proud Republican. Harry supported the campaigns of many officials. One could often find Harry stuffing envelope mailers, collecting signatures and placing candidate signs throughout the community. After retirement, Harry spent most of his time at his beach house in Ocean City, MD. He enjoyed spending time on the boardwalk as well as reading the local paper on his deck. Preceding Harry’s passing were siblings John, Marie, Dorothy, Elmer Jr., and Jim Lytle. Harry is survived by his wife, Helen; his daughter, Susan; two granddaughters, Katherine and Elizabeth, wife of Matthew Smith; siblings, Joseph of Tampa, FL, Kenneth of Westview, VA, Phyllis Waterstreet of Abington, MD, Dale Lytle of Glen Rock, and Darlene Taylor of White Hall; and a special cousin Bud Lytle. A celebration of life tribute service will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, July 3, 2015 at Centre Presbyterian Church, 83 New Park Rd., New Park, PA with his pastor, The Rev. James L. Biller officiating. Viewings will be held from 6-8:00 PM Thursday at Life Tributes by Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion and from 10-11:00 AM Friday at the Church.
