WILKES-BARRE-Harry J. "Pete" Mertis, 88, of Carlisle Street, Wilkes-Barre, died Wednesday, February 7, 2007 in Hospice Community Care, Geisinger South, Wilkes-Barre. Born in Wilkes-Barre on December 23, 1918, he was the son of the late Harry L. and Helen (Jacobs) Mertis. He was a 1936 graduate of G.A.R. High Scholl and attended Wyoming Seminary for one year. Mr. Mertis was a member of Albright United Methodist Church and attended St. John Episcopal Church, Hamlin. He was an avid baseball fan and loved working with cars. He was also a past manager for the South Wilkes-Barre Little League. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a fleet manager for Planters Peanuts/Standard Brands for 40 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Jane Brink, who passed away in 2000. He is survived by his son, Jeff Mertis and his wife, Loretta, Wilkes-Barre; daughter Virginia Callaghan and her husband, Larry, Andover Township, New Jersey; grandchildren Shelly Mertis-Imam, Todd Callaghan and Sherry Mertis; loving companion, Marianne Berryman, Canadensis. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:30 .m. at the Kniffen O'Malley Funeral Home, Inc., 465 South Main Street, Wilkes-Barre. The Reverend Patrice H. Goodwin the Father Edward Erb will officiate. Interment will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call Friday evening from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Community Care.
