WILLIAMSPORT - Harriet Verna Root, 93, passed away Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at The Gate House, Williamsport. She was born on August 10, 1916 in Westmont, NJ and was the daughter of the late Charles J. and Bertha (Pennock) Root. The Salvation Army was Harriet's church, her place of worship for most of her life. She held various lay positions during that time. She was also an employee of the Salvation Army for 49 years in Newark, NJ and Manhattan, NY. Harriet is survived by two sisters; Mary Ann Grimes and Winifred Charles, both of Williamsport. She also leaves a number of nieces and nephews, great and great grand nieces and nephews and two life-long friends; Dorothea Hargreaves and Richard McNally. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister; Ethel M. Hamm, two brothers; Jesse and W. Edward Root, one niece; Dolly Shoemaker and one nephew; William Root. There will be a time of visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, February 20, 2010 at the Salvation Army, 457 Market Street, Williamsport, PA, 17701 with the funeral service beginning at 11 a.m. Major Steven Stoops and Major and Mrs. Edward Sinclair will officiate the services. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family. It was Harriet's desire, that in lieu of flowers, any remembrances be sent to the Salvation Army. Arrangements are being handled by the Allen & Redmond Funeral Home, 331 Elmira St., Williamsport.
