Dover—Harold J. "Joe" Smith, 77, died Wednesday, March 21, 2007 at his residence in Dover Township. He was the wife of Doris E. (Ott) Smith to whom he was married for 53 years. A memorial mass will held 10 a.m., Monday, March 26, 2007 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 950 W. Market St., York, with the Rev. Fr. Thomas R. Hoke officiating. A visitation will be held from 9 to10 a.m., Monday, at the church. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd, York, is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Smith was born May 9, 1929 in McSherrystown, a son of the late Paul H. and Genevieve M. (Lawrence) Smith. He was employed as a Machine Operator for 40 years with GTE/Sylvania until his retirement in 1992. After retiring he worked at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church Elementary School. A United States Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, he was also a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in York and Shiloh American Legion #791. An avid golfer and former bowler, trips to Atlantic City and Dover Downs were a favorite past-time, but his priority was always taking care of his family and friends. In addition to his wife, Mr. Smith is survived by two sons, Daniel L. Smith of Dover and Michael J. Smith and his wife, Beth of Dover, three daughters, Joan D. Smith of York, Mary Jo Nace and her husband, Todd of Wrightsville, and Judy A. Thoman and her husband, Dean of Dover, ten grandchildren, Amy, Jenny, Matthew, Danielle, James, Jonathan, Kayla, Courtney, Jared and Nicole, three great-grandchildren, Andy, Alex and Hayden, one brother, Nelson Smith of Hanover, one sister, Rita Senft of York and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers, John, Paul and Bernard Smith and two sisters, Mary Margaret and Helena Smith. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Children's Miracle Network, Hershey Medical Center, 500 Cherry Dr., Hershey, Pa 17033.
