York--Harold F. Stevens 96, died, Thursday, July 28, 2011 at Normandie Ridge Retirement Community in W. Manchester Township. He was the husband of Aileen W. (White) Stevens. A Graveside Service will be 3 pm, Monday, August 1, 2011 at Fairview Cemetery in Mercersburg, with Elder Lester A. White, officiating. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd, York, is in charge of arrangements. Born December 9, 1914 in Mercersburg, he was the son of the late Harry & Rebessie (Haupt) Stevens. Mr. Stevens was a member of Bethany United Church of Christ in York, where he served in numerous capacities. After moving to Normandie Ridge, he was associated with Faith United Church of Christ. He was also a member of AARP and the Retired Federal Employees Association. He was a lifetime avid golfer and achieved a hole in one when in his early eighties. Mr. Stevens retired from forty plus years with the Federal Government. After graduation from Mercersburg High School he worked for the US House of Representatives. Prior to the Second World War, he joined the US Navy’s Bureau of Ships and was posted to their arsenal in Louisville, Kentucky where he helped develop and test the ship’s gunnery. After the War, he transferred to the Naval Depot at Mechanicsburg and served as the assistant to the Commandant. He remained in that position until his retirement in 1979. During this period, he and his wife lived at 702 West King Street. He moved to the Normandie Ridge Retirement Community in 2001. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Aileen (White) Stevens of Waynesboro, and a son Harry who died in infancy.
