Renovo - Harley R. Stiger, age 85, died at Bucktail Medical Center, where he had been a resident for six years, on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008. He was born in Renovo on April 19, 1922, son of the late Harley A. and Eva Stackhouse Stiger. He was president of his graduating class from Renovo High School in 1940, and he attended Penn State University from 1940-1943 where he received a BS degree in electrical engineering. Harley joined the U.S. Navy in 1943, serving as an ensign JG on the USS Endicott, until his discharge from WWII in 1946. He was employed from 1946 until his retirement on Dec. 31, 1982 with the General Electric Co. in Erie, Pa. In 1944, he married Florence E. Hallberg who passed away in 2001. Harley was a devoted and loving husband and father who dedicated his life to his wife, family, and his faith. He became a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Wesleyville, Pa. in 1947. He served on church council, various committees of the church, and was vice president of the council at different times. He also served as a Sunday school teacher for almost 50 years. Harley was a member of the USS Endicott Association and the General Electric Elfun Society. He was a member in good standing of the Commonwealth Lodge #695 F.& A.M. and the Lodge Council Chapter Consistory of the Scottish Rite Bodies in the Valley of Erie. He received his 50 year membership pin two years ago. He also enjoyed fly fishing, golfing, and was an avid Penn State football fan. Harley is survived by his son: Donald Stiger and daughter-in-law Christine Anderson Stiger of Sommerset, N.J. and their two children: Rebecca and David Stiger, and his daughter: Ann L. Gregory and son-in-law Gary Gregory and their two children: Melissa Gregory Paloskey and her husband Bob and Laurie Gregory Hlodash and her husband George. Also surviving are four great grandchildren: Nicholas and Christopher Paloskey and Megan and Allison Hlodash. He was preceded in death by one sister. Funeral services will be held at the Zion Lutheran Church at 11:00 a.m. Saturday with Rev. Dee Calhoun officiating. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by the Bucktail Detachment of the Marine Corps League. The family will receive friends at the church from 10-11 a.m. In lieu of flowers the family has requested memorials to the Bucktail Medical Center or the E.L.C.A. World Hunger Appeal.
