H. Vernon Tyson

RED LION – H. Vernon Tyson, 98, passed away Friday, December 8, 2023 at York Hospital. He was the husband of the late Erma E. (Grim) Tyson whom he married in 1949.


A Celebration of Life Tribute Service will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, December 14, 2023 at St. Paul (Lebanon) Lutheran Church, 6955 Rippling Run Rd., Felton with his pastor, The Rev. Kathleen Kuehl officiating. A viewing will be held from 6-8:00 PM Wednesday at Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion with Masonic Rites provided by F&AM Red Lion Lodge at 7:45 PM. There will also be a viewing from 10-11:00 AM Thursday at the Church. Burial will be in Lebanon Lutheran Cemetery with full military rites provided by York County Veterans Honor Guard.


Mr. Tyson was born on January 2, 1925 in Felton, a son of the late Pius H. and Margaret E. (Mitzel) Tyson. He worked on local farms as a teen and owned a business raising domesticated rabbits called “Shady Maple Rabbitry.” Vernon then joined the US Army during WWII where he was a combat veteran, Staff Sgt. in the 36th Infantry Div., and a Bronze Star recipient. He was a member of Red Lion American Legion and VFW.


Following his graduation at Thompson Business College, Mr. Tyson spent his 35-year career in the banking industry. He was a Vice President at Dauphin Deposit Bank and retired in 1987. In the 1960’s and 70’s he served on the Red Lion Borough Civil Service Commission, was a board member of Red Lion VNA, and board member of Kaltreider Benfer Library. Vernon had also served as one of the original board members of Red Lion Area Ambulance Assoc in 1974 and serving for 18 years. In 1992 he received the Catherine Meyer Award from Red Lion Borough. Mr. Tyson was a member of St. Paul (Lebanon) Lutheran Church, past member and President of Church Council, and President of Lebanon Lutheran Cemetery Assoc.


Vernon was a member and Past President of Rotary Club of Red Lion-Dallastown, Past President of Conservation Society of York County; member of York County Parks, Railroad Preservation Society, Natural Lands Trust of York County, Red Lion BPO Elks Lodge, and York County History Center. His Masonic affiliations include, F&AM Red Lion Lodge 649, Scottish Rite Club, Square Club of York, Harrisburg Consistory, First Capital High Twelve Club, York County Shrine Club, and Tall Cedars of Lebanon.


Mr. Tyson is survived by a son, Jerel B. Tyson; a daughter, Joyce Tyson Anderson and husband William; a granddaughter, Jennifer Anderson and husband Nick Lam; a great granddaughter, Aria Lam; and a brother, G. Robert Tyson. He was preceded in death by nine siblings.
