RED LION – Glen Sherwood Godfrey, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 4, 2023, after 98 full years of life. He passed away peacefully at York Hospital.
Glen, a lifelong farmer, enjoyed working alongside his wife, Vera, on the multigenerational dairy farm that had remained in his family for 175 years. He dedicated his life to his wife, family, and the church. The land, upkeep of the buildings, and the dairy herd were a priority for him. He instilled a strong work ethic in his daughters, working beside him in the fields or dairy barn. Glen served as a member and deacon at the Codorus Church of the Brethren in Loganville. Glen was a member of the Holstein Assoc. USA and often volunteered his time and farm equipment for the Winterstown Fire Co. Halloween hayrides.
Born in Red Lion on December 12, 1924, Glen was a son of the late Curtis and Edna (Keeney) Godfrey. Glen and his late wife Vera Marie (Warner) Godfrey were married on June 29, 1946. He leaves his six daughters, Sharon L. and husband Wayne Sweitzer of Jacobus, Judith A. Merroth of Downingtown, Carolyn Y. Paup and husband Gary Kling of Windsor, Donna L. and husband Paul Quickel of Red Lion, Faye L. and husband Dennis Barshinger of Windsor, and Susan M. and husband Andrew McKinnell of Red Lion; 15 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; and two sisters, Loretta Sweitzer and Bernice Zellers both of Red Lion. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jill Y. Dehoff; a son-in-law, D. Thomas Merroth; a brother, Kenneth Godfrey; and two sisters, Orpha Bahn and Esther Hengst.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, July 9, 2023, at Codorus Church of the Brethren, 1129 Dunkard Valley Rd., Dallastown with Pastor Eric Ritenour and Duane Bahn officiating. A viewing will be held from 1:30-3:00 PM Sunday at the church. The burial will be in the church cemetery. Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion is in charge of arrangements.
