YORK- Gladys S. (Sprenkel) Diehl, 105, passed away Friday, December 29, 2017 at Country Meadows Leader Heights. She was the wife of the late Austin E. Diehl, with whom she shared 70 years of marriage before Austin’s passing on February 20, 2005. Born August 23, 1912 in Loganville, PA, Gladys was the daughter of the late William H. and Alice (Hovis) Sprenkel. She graduated from William Penn High School in 1930 where she was the personal editor of the year book and later served on the class reunion committee. With an ambition to be a private secretary, she went to Thompsons Business College and graduated in 1931. Immediately upon graduation she became the private secretary for Royce Kohr’s General Insurance Office until 1935. “Nana”, as known to her family, met Austin when they were babies, (their colic cure came from the same bottle of medicine). They grew up together attending the same nursery and confirmation classes at church and attended the same grade and high schools. They were married June 14, 1934. Collecting antiques was their favorite hobby and they loved sharing stories about all of their treasures. God, family, and friends were very important to Gladys. At 101, she became the first “Country Meadows Angel“ welcoming new residents to their new home. She cherished her beloved family and enjoyed cooking family dinners as long as she was able. She was also a member of Aldersgate United Methodist church. A Celebration of Life tribute service will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, January 20, 2017 at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road, York, with The Reverend Dr. Dennis Hamsher of Country Meadows, officiating.
