Gladys Marie (Byers) Ness

YORK- Gladys Marie (Byers) Ness, 83, passed away Friday, June 12, 2015 at her home. She was the wife of the late John “Jack” Ness, Jr. The couple were married for 60 years before Jack’s passing in 2011. A Celebration of Life tribute service will be held at 10 AM on Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road, York, with Margie Stoner, Chaplain of Heartland Hospice and The Reverend Elmer W.V. Scofield, visiting Pastor of Shiloh United Church of Christ Church officiating. A viewing will be held from 9-10 AM prior to the service. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery. Born August 13, 1931 in Wellsville, Gladys was a daughter of the late Glen S. and Blanche M (Zeigler) Byers. She worked for the York City School District from 1960-1993 in the cafeteria at Jacob L. Devers Elementary School. She ended her years there as head cook and with many colleagues who turned into friends that she held dear. Gladys enjoyed every day of life. She was a member of Shiloh United Church of Christ. She was a life member of the Devers PTA, a member of the West Manchester Mall Walkers, and was an active Girl Scout Troop leader. Mrs. Ness is survived by a son, John Ness and his wife Rose; a daughter, Joanne Strine; three grandsons, Robert Ness, John Eric Ness and his wife Meghan, and Christopher Ness and his wife Kate; three great grandsons, Austin Ness and his mother Teffanie Ness-Smeltzer, Matthew Ness and Easton Ness; a great granddaughter, Lorelia Ness, and a sister, Dorothy Laird. In addition to her husband and parents, Gladys was preceded in death by a great grandson, John 'Jack' Robert Ness.
