WINDSOR — Gerald E. Haugh, 85, died Friday, December 31, 2010 at Rest Haven Nursing Home. He was the husband of the late Glenda (Swords) Haugh and Pansy (Parker) Haugh. A Celebration of Life Service will be 10 AM, Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at Life Tributes by Olewiler and Heffner Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc, 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion, with the Rev. Lyle Bundy officiating. Military honors will be provided by the York County Veterans Honor Guard at the funeral home. A visitation will be held from 9-10 AM, Wednesday, at the funeral home. Burial will be held in Windsor Church of God cemetery. Born in Red Lion on December 22, 1925, he was the only son of the late George S. and Darling V. (Runkle) Haugh. Mr. Haugh graduated from Red Lion High School in 1944. During his senior year he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was in boot camp at Parris Island, SC during his senior prom. He was a flight clerk and served aboard a Marine fighter squadron on an aircraft carrier that was stationed in Hawaii during World War II. After the war ended he enrolled at Shippensburg University and graduated in 1954. During his college career he was elected president of his college class at the end of his first year. After graduation he accepted a teaching position at the Interboro School District in Delaware County, a suburb of Philadelphia. He later enrolled at Temple University and majored in school administration. He received his Master’s Degree from Temple in the summer of 1956. In January 1958 he was appointed principal of three elementary schools in the Penn-Delco School District. He was the first principal that began a non-graded primary school in the state of PA. In 1962 he moved into the secondary level and in September 1963 began the first secondary school in the state of PA to have a compulsory after school activity where all the students had to participate to be able to graduate. In June 1971 he resigned and joined the business world as an entrepreneur. He established a farm market in the Strafford-Wayne area, getting all his produce from his uncle and cousin’s farms in southern New Jersey. He had the largest farm market in the area. One lady customer said, “He was a legend on the main line”. His response was “as long as it was a living legend”. In 1989 he and his wife retired and returned to York County and set up residency in Windsor Township. He was a member of the PA Elementary Principals Assoc., the PA Secondary Principals Assoc., a life member of the PA State Education Assoc., the National Education Assoc., and a member of different Methodist Churches in his travels. During his retirement in York County he was a member of Winterstown United Methodist Church. He served on numerous committees and was a leader and advisor in the church. Mr. Haugh is survived by a cousin and caregiver, Susan M. (Bahn) Arnold of Windsor. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Emanuel United Methodist Church of Windsor, 2185 Windsor Rd, Windsor, Pa 17366.
