DALLASTOWN- Gerald Boyd Wood, 87, died on Sunday, January 7, 2024 at York Hospital. He was the husband of Martha Jean (Yinger) Wood. The couple wed on July 28, 1956.
A celebration of life tribute service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Pl., Red Lion with the Reverend David Stough officiating. A visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. prior to the service. The service will be livestreamed at HeffnerCare.com around 11 a.m. by searching Gerald’s obituary. Burial service will be held in the spring at Trindle Springs Cemetery.
Born on March 1, 1936 at home in Mechanicsburg, he was a son of the late C. Boyd and Mary (Keeney) Wood. He graduated from Bloomsburg University in 1958. Gerald was a teacher at Dallastown High School from 1969 to 1993 until his retirement and was also the head football coach.
Mr. Wood started his teaching career at Big Spring in Newville where he was also an assistant football coach. He then taught at Cumberland Valley where he was an assistant football coach and head track coach and William Penn in Harrisburg for two years where he coached football and track. He was inducted into the West Shore Sports Hall of Fame. Gerald was a member of the Free & Accepted Masons Consistory, Mechanicsburg and served on the board of the former York County Blind Center.
Along with his wife, Martha, Gerald is survived by his daughter, Terry L. Markey and her husband, Jeffrey L. of York; four grandchildren, Scotti L. Warble and her husband, Jeff, Casey L. Markey and his wife, Ashley, Olivia Maynard and her husband, Brett and Luke Grim and his wife, Meghan; ten great grandchildren, Ava Warble, Sophia Warble, Taylor Markey, Ryan Markey, Brynn Maynard, Reese Maynard, Laine Maynard, Jackson Maynard, Calvin Grim and Everett Grim; sister, Janet Wright; and son in law, Terry Grim of Hallam. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Nikki J. Grim; two sisters, Claribel Rosenberger and Joyce Wood; and brother, Kenneth Wood.
