George R. Smith

RED LION – George R. Smith, 67, passed away Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at his home. He was the husband of Deborah A. (Groft) Smith to whom he was married for 37 years on March 20, 2014. A gathering of friends will be held from 1-3:00 PM Monday, June 2, 2014 at Life Tributes by Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion. Full military honors will be presented at 3:00 PM Monday at the Funeral Home by the Dallastown American Legion Honor Guard. Born October 2, 1946 in Sunbury, PA a son of the late George R. and Elaine (Engle) Smith, he had retired from GTE. Following his retirement, George worked for York County Government. Mr. Smith was a past commander and active member of Dallastown American Legion Post 605 and enjoyed playing in the pool league at the Legion. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. George was a US Army veteran of the Vietnam War. In addition to his wife, Mr. Smith is survived by a son, Stephen A. and wife Tracie Bard of West York; three daughters, Tressa L. and husband Mike Barnhart of Grafton, OH, Kelly S. and husband Greg Houck of Brogue, and Kristi L. and husband Phil Skinner of Parma, OH; 11 grandchildren; two brothers, Phillip Smith of York and Michael Smith of Dover; two sisters, Marcia Rebuck of Dornsife, PA and Kathy Parr of York; and a close nephew, Steve Simpson of Felton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Dallastown American Legion, 57 W. Main Street, Dallastown, PA 17313.
