YORK - George G. "Jack" Thompson, 85, of Manchester Twp., formerly of Baltimore, died at 5:00 a.m. Thursday, March 6, 2008 at York Hospital. He was the husband of Elizabeth E. "Betty" (O'Donnell) Thompson with whom he celebrated a 67th wedding anniversary on January 13, 2008. A Celebration of Life Service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Heffner Funeral Chapel, 1551 Kenneth Rd., York with military honors by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Burial will be in Lorraine Park Cemetery, Baltimore. Viewing will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Mr. Thompson was born March 19, 1922 in Baltimore. He was the son of the late George Gilman and Mabel Estelle (Webb) Thompson. He retired in 1990 as a Construction Superintendent with Whiting Turner Construction Company in Baltimore after more than 35 years of service and was especially proud of his work on the Inner Harbor project and the IBM buildings. He was a 1939 graduate of Polytechnical High School in Baltimore and was a US Navy veteran of World War II serving as a Torpedoman's Mate Third Class in the Pacific Theatre of operations. He was also a member of the Sea Bees and was a sharpshooter. He was a member of the Towson, MD American Legion Post # 22. In addition to his wife, Mr. Thompson is survived by two daughters, Patricia Pahl and husband, Wesley of Lake Wales, FL, and Diane Peroutka of Annapolis, MD; eight grandchildren, James Pahl, Wendy Benz, Jeremy Thompson, Dawn Hubbard, Holly Kreh, Elizabeth Peroutka, Patrick Peroutka and Timothy Peroutka; two great granddaughters, Jessica Kreh and Lauren Benz; a brother, Herbert Thompson of Washington, DC; and a sister, Betty Burgan of Jarrettsville, MD. A son, Timothy Thompson, preceded him in death in 2003. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 140 Roosevelt Ave., Suite 208, York, PA 17401 or the American Lung Association, 3001 Old Gettysburg Rd., Camp Hill, PA 17011.
