George A. Spangler

HANOVER George A. Spangler, Jr., 91, of Hanover died at 11:30 a.m. Friday, October 22, 2010, at the Hanover Hospital. He was the husband of the late Edna M. (Sheets) Spangler who died in 1994. Following cremation, private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, 1551 Kenneth Rd., York is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Spangler was born on March 1, 1919, in York. He was the son of the late George A., Sr. and Alma (Fidler) Spangler. He was a York County fireman for 44 years retiring from the York City Fire Department in 1972 after 20 years of service. He had also served at both the Yoe and Spring Garden Twp. Fire Departments. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Retired Professional Firefighters Association; the Retired Firefighters Local 627; the White Rose Philatelic Society; and also had a stand at both Central and Eastern Markets in York for many years. Mr. Spangler is survived by his son, George A. Spangler, III and his wife, Fay of York; his daughter, Ruth E. Tome of Hanover; a granddaughter, Sherry Tome; and three sisters, Lucille Sharkey of Illinois, Dorothy Strausbaugh and Sara Billet, both of York. He was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth L. Spangler; two brothers; and three sisters. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association - York County Division, 610 Community Way, Lancaster, PA 17603.
