YORK- Gary E. Potter, 67 passed away Friday, June 20, 2008 at his residence. He was born February 25, 1941 in Mifflin Co. to the late Edward and Alva (Wise) Potter. He is survived by Mary Mills, his partner of 25 years; a daughter, Sherry Luckenbaugh and her husband Joe of York; two grandchildren, Nathaniel and Renae Luckenbaugh; a son, Charles E. Potter of Newpark; and three sisters, Doris Hench of Mifflintown, Jean Fry of Steelton, and Shirley Hughey of Honey Grove. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Joan Ritchey and Sadie Coyler. Mr. Potter retired as an Electrician Foreman from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of General Services in 1996 with 33 years' service. He was a life member of VFW Post 7415 in New Cumberland, the Steelton Italian Club, the American Legion Post 420 of Steelton, the Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art, and PARSE. He served four years in the U.S. Navy, crossing the 180th Meridian and the Equator and served aboard the U.S.S. Peterson and the U.S.S. Brough. He was awarded an Antarctica Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. He enjoyed hunting, flea marketing, the outdoors, the circus, and various amusement parks like Hershey and Knoebels. A Celebration of Life tribute service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 1, 2008 at St Paul's United Methodist Church, 4360 Board Rd., Manchester, with the Rev. Darby Nace officiating. A viewing will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the church. Following the services, burial will be at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery with full military honors provided by VFW Post 23 in Lebanon County. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to PANCAN (Pancreatic Cancer Action Network), 2141 Rosecrans Ave., Suite 7000 El Segundo, CA 90245 and Compassionate Care Hospice, 2449 S. Queen St., York, PA 17402 Heffner Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd, York is in charge of arrangements.
