YORK – Frederick R. Merck, 86, passed away on Wednesday June 17, 2015 at Pleasant Acres Nursing Home. He was the husband of the late Barbara J. (Keister) Merck. A graveside service will be held at 3:00 PM Monday, June 22, 2015 at Canadochly Cemetery, 4845 E. Prospect Rd., York with Certified Celebrant, Betty Frey officiating. Full military rites will be provided by York County Veterans Honor Guard. Life Tributes by Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion is in charge of arrangements. Born August 22, 1928 in Long Island, NY a son of the late Frederick L. and Frances E. Merck, he retired from both Yorktowne Paper Mills and the Pennsylvania Railroad. Mr. Merck was a member of Hellam VFW, Red Lion F&AM Masonic Lodge, Shriners Intl.; and was very active with the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg where he had served on the Board of Directors. Mr. Merck served in the US Marine Corps from 1946 to 1951. Mr. Merck is survived by two stepsons, Douglas E. and wife Missy Shaffer and Timothy W. and wife Sandy Shaffer both of York; a stepdaughter, Shelley J. Metzler of West York; five grandchildren, Stacey and husband Colin Roache, Ashley, Jared, Aaron, and Mark; and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Scottie Shaffer.
