Florence Elaine Greiner, "Elaine", 97, passed away on Thursday, April 28, 2016. Elaine is survived by her husband of 73 years, Walter, and her two children, Gary and Cathy. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Joanne. Elaine spent her childhood in Randallstown, Md. While just a teenager, she suffered the loss of her mother to leukemia and helped raise her much younger sister until her father remarried. After high school, she entered a clerical school in Baltimore, Md., graduating with honors, and subsequently became a bookkeeper for a law firm in Baltimore. She met her future husband while in clerical school and they were married August 10, 1942. As a war bride, she followed Walter on military assignments to various locations throughout the South, developing a permanent deep love for the area and the people who opened their hearts to the young couple. A longer assignment brought her to Roswell, N.M., where her first child, Gary Michael, was born. After the war ended, the couple returned to Randallstown where Cathy was born. Elaine was a talented ten pin league bowler, an avid yard sale attendee, and a superb baker. She had an unusually green thumb when it came to raising African violets. Reading was a lifelong passion, as was watching sports, particularly baseball and football. She also loved trips to Ocean City, Md., every summer, and vacations in the U.S. and Canada. The family moved to York in 1966 where she remained for the rest of her life. In York, Elaine participated in several Welcome Wagon groups, including a pinochle club, where she developed many dear friendships. She was a compassionate, loving, and supportive wife, mother, and friend, and sharing our lives with her was a gift without measure. We will carry her love in our hearts forever. A viewing will be held Wednesday, May 4, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road, York. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the American Red Cross in her memory.
