Faye M. Quickel

RED LION - Faye Marie Quickel died Thursday, September 21, 2023 at Country Meadows of York – South. She was born on November 8, 1932, the daughter of the late Edward and Ruth Mellinger. She graduated from Red Lion Area Senior High School, which is where she met her future husband, Charles Coburn Quickel. Faye and Coburn lived in North York for two years, moved to Red Lion, and lived there for the next 58 years. They moved from Red Lion in 2007 to Country Meadows. Together they enjoyed 61 years of marriage until Coburn passed away in 2013.

Faye was predeceased by her brothers Glenn Cooper and Dale Mellinger. She is survived by her son Greg and wife Berry, and son Gerry and wife Deb. Faye is also survived by her niece Donna Grove and family.

Faye was born in Windsor and sang in the church choir at Windsor United Methodist Church. Later, she and her parents moved to Long Level and endured several floods of the Susquehanna River. She stayed home and cared for her two sons until they were ages 17 and 14. In 1970, she became the secretary in the Guidance Department at Red Lion Middle School and retired after 20 years in 1990.

Mrs. Quickel was a 60+ year member of Bethany United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir, taught Kindergarten Sunday School, was Class President of the Sunshine Girls Class, and a member of the Four Fold Friends Sunday School Class. She was also a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts.

Faye enjoyed travel and the beach. They vacationed many years at Chincoteague, VA and eventually built a vacation home, which they enjoyed for 15 years. Upon Coburn’s retirement, they purchased a motor home and set a goal of traveling to every state in the US. This goal was achieved in 3 years, which also included a 3-month trip to Alaska.

Since Coburn was a graduate of Penn State, Faye became a big fan of Penn State. The motor home came in handy to meet their friends at Penn State, tail gate, and enjoy the game. In 1995, they traveled cross country to the Rose Bowl Parade and saw Penn State play in the Rose Bowl and win against Oregon, 38-20.

In 1998, Faye and Coburn became “snowbirds” and purchased a home in Punta Gorda, FL. They enjoyed 10 years of spending the winter months in warm and sunny Florida.
