Evelyn D. (Brown) Markel

YORK- Evelyn D. (Brown) Markel, age 82, died at 8:25 p.m. Saturday, April 26, 2014 at York Hospital. Evelyn was born on February 27, 1932 in York. She was a daughter of the late Charles Brown and Roseanna Flory Brown. She was the loving wife of the late John S. Markel, Sr. who died in 1991. Mrs. Markel owned and operated Markel’s Janitorial Services for more than 50 years and continued to do so well into her 70’s. She was also a member of the VFW Women’s Auxiliary. Evelyn was a very social and outgoing individual. She was an avid Yankees and Dallas Cowboys fan and loved playing board games. Evelyn adored her family, especially her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends. Mrs. Markel is survived by her loving children Yvonne Combs and spouse Andrew Combs; Michael Markel and companion Chris Thompson. Her adorable grandchildren Nicole Royer and spouse Matt Royer; Bradley Combs; Eric Thompson and spouse Katie Thompson. She also leaves 3 great-grandchildren she adored with all her heart, Kamrin Royer, Landon Royer and Channing Thompson. She is also survived by one sister, Patricia Smith, spouse of the late Milton Smith and many loveable nieces and nephews. She will be sadly missed by all whose life she has touched over the years. She was preceded in death by her son, John S. Markel, Jr.; four brothers, Wilbert, Robert, Eugene and James Brown; and two sisters, Daisy Whorley and Anna Adams. A celebration of life service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd., York with Certified Celebrant Betty Frey officiating. Viewings will be from 6-8 p.m. on Friday and from 9-10 a.m. on Saturday, both at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mt. Rose Cemetery.
