York—Eugene E. Herman Sr., 85, died Sunday, October 4, 2009 at York Hospital. He was the husband of the late Audrey L. (Krewson) Herman. A graveside tribute service will be held 10 a.m., Wednesday, October 7, 2009 at Red Lion Cemetery, located on Gay Street Extended in Red Lion, with the Rev. Dr. Sharon Barley, officiating. Life Tributes by Olewiler and Heffner Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc, 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion, is in charge of arrangements. Born January 27, 1924 in Red Lion, he was a son of the late Emanuel and Fairy (Lemkelde) Herman. He graduated from Red Lion High School in 1941 and served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He began working at the York County Prison as the prison's Deputy Warden, and later became a police officer with Red Lion Borough. After several years as a police officer, he started his employment with James F. Favino Construction, where he worked until becoming head of maintenance at Pleasant Acres Nursing and Rehabilitation Center (formerly York County Nursing Home). An avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting and fishing and was a true family man, that always put the needs of his family first. Mr. Herman is survived by two sons, Eugene E. Herman Jr, of York and Kerry L. Herman and his wife Delores of York, one step grandson, Derek S. Hoffman and one sister-in-law, Joyce Emig and her husband, David of Dover. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Cancer Patient Help Fund, 25 Monument Rd, Suite 194, York, Pa 17403.
