TROY- Ermold E. “Sam” Hurlburt, 85, of Troy, PA passed away on Monday, January 27, 2014 at the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre, PA. He was the loving husband of Edith (Reed) Hurlburt. The couple married April 3, 1954 and had 59 happy years together. The memorial service to honor Sam’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, January 30, 2014 at the First Baptist Church of Troy, 579 Canton Street Troy, PA with Rev. Garry Zuber officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of Sam’s family in Glenwood Cemetery. The Gerald W. Vickery, Jr. Funeral Home, Inc. 1093 West Main Street Troy, PA has been entrusted with the arrangements. Sam was born on November 25, 1928 at home in Troy, PA son of the late Harry and Minnie Mae (Merrick) Hurlburt. He was a US Air Force veteran, and later worked for the railroad, American Bridge, and ended his career as owner of Hurlburt Home Improvement. Sam attended First Baptist Church of Troy, and was a member and Past Master of Trojan Lodge #306 of Free & Accepted Masons. He enjoyed gardening and sold cabbages and strawberries at his home. Sam was a founding member of the Garfield Club at Terrace Lanes in Troy and enjoyed the pancake breakfasts that were put on Sam’s Sugar Shack in East Troy. He also enjoyed cutting wood, tinkering around the house, and spending time at his sugar shack. Sam enjoyed traveling, having traveled to 49 of the 50 states, also Canada and Mexico. In winter Sam would ski, in summer he would play golf, and every Sunday was NASCAR Sunday. Sam had a great sense of humor and enjoyed scaring friends and neighbors with his stuffed black bear. To Sam, family was everything. He could be found most Saturday mornings having breakfast with his family at Julie’s Restaurant and especially enjoyed spending time with his great grandchildren. Sam is survived by his loving wife Edith, his children; Gloria Jean Hurlburt of Troy, PA, Philip Hiram “Bub” (Rose Jenney) Hurlburt of Milan, PA, and Charles Edward (Elaine Ray) Hurlburt of Jasper, TX, his grandchildren; Nick and Randi Randall of Granville, PA, Katie White of Troy, PA, Harry and Bobbi Jo Hurlburt of Gillett, and Eric Hurlburt of Welllsburg, NY, his great grandchildren; Jordyn and Allison Hurlburt, Ben, Eli, and Max Randall, and Amber White, his sister Hildred Austic of North Carolina, his sister-in-law Gladys Hurlburt of Troy, PA, along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Sam was preceded in death by his parents, his infant daughter, his daughter-in-law Vicki, his brothers; Lou, Denny, and DeWayne Hurlburt, and his sisters-in-law; Shirley, Jackie, Bea, and Dorothy.
