YORK- Emma I. (Grim) Markey, 99, died Sunday, August 31, 2014 at Pleasant Acres Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in York and was received into her permanent heavenly home. She was the wife of the late Robert E. Markey who passed away May 14, 1968. Together they owned and operated Markey’s Food Market in West York for 21 years. There will be no viewing. Burial will be in Red Lion Cemetery on Friday, September 5, 2014 at 11 AM. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road, York, is in charge of arrangements. Born July 22, 1915 in North Hopewell Twp., she was the only child of the late Robert B. and Nellie (Mitzel) Grim. Emma graduated valedictorian from Red Lion High School Class of 1933. After her husband’s death, she worked in the cafeteria at York College, as a custodian at AMP, Inc. in Loganville, and as a Pennsylvania Dutch cook and housekeeper for Mr. & Mrs. Walter Sipe in Phoenix, AZ. Having graduated in 1958 as a trained Practical Nurse her last employment was as a live-in companion for various individuals in York and Red Lion until 1985 when she retired to Fort Myers, FL for 10 years. She returned to York and spent 14 years living with her daughter and son-in-law and spent her remaining years in the nursing home. She was a lifelong member of Zion United Methodist Church in York, where she played the organ until she moved to Florida. While in Florida, she attended and played organ at North Fort Myers Church of the Brethren. She loved playing the organ, crocheting, puzzles, game shows on TV, traveling, eating out, preparing meals for her family and being involved with her family. Emma is survived by two daughters, Maxine E. Hunter of York and Donna L. Hopple and her husband Glenn R. Smith of York; three grandchildren, J. Patrick Hunter and his wife Terri of North Carolina, Robert H. Hunter and his wife Sarah of Virginia, and Melissa A. (Hunter) Berry and her husband Dan of York; two great grandchildren, Seth P. Hunter and Nicole M. Hunter; four step-grandchildren, Lori Smith, Scott Smith, Teresa Bixler and Stewart Smith; five step-great grandchildren, Matthew Eveler, Tessia Hollinger, Channing Bixler, Aliyah Leonard, and Tiffany Berry; seven step- great great grandchildren, Emma, Matthew Jr., Madison, Skyler, Savannah, Makhii and Malayah. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the SPCA, 3159 Susquehanna Trail, York, PA 17406 or the Zion United Methodist Church, 1030 Carlisle Rd., York, PA 17404.
