MT.WOLF-Elwood "Woody" G. Whorl, 92, died Saturday, November 7, 2009 at Pleasant Acres Nursing Home. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth McClure (Doll) Whorl to whom he was married to for 64 years. A memorial service will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, November 12, 2009 at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc. , 1551 Kenneth Road, York with his pastor the Rev. Mitchell Galloway officiating. A visitation will be held 9-10:00 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Mt. Rose Cemetery with full military rites provided for by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Mr. Whorl was born March 14, 1917 in York, a son of the late Oscar V. and Anna E. (Brown) Whorl. He was a former employee of Texaco, now known as Cheveron, for over 35 years until his retirement. Mr. Whorl was a very faithful Christian and a life member of Fourth United Methodist Church, York, where he taught Men's Adult Sunday School for 45 years. He also was a volunteer for Child Evangelism, driving children on a bus to various services. Mr. Whorl was a U.S. Army veteran serving his country in the European Theater of WWII from August 1944 to April 1945. He served as a combat medic in the 10th Armor Division, where he received two bronze stars. Mr. Whorl is survived by two sons, James R. Whorl and wife, Celia R. of Mt. Wolf, and Dale E. Whorl and wife, Linda Smith of Brattleboro, VT; two granddaughters, Michelle L. Kohr and husband, Stacey of Mt. Wolf, and Angela S. Lucabaugh and husband, Chad of York; four great grandchildren, Colin and Savannah Lucabaugh, and Ashlie and Owen Kohr; three brothers, Glenn, Jack, and James Whorl; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Vernon and Charles Whorl; and a sister Margaret Himmelwright. Memorial contributions may be made to Fourth United Methodist Church, 1067 E. Market Street, York, PA 17403.
