BROGUE – Elmer W. “Butch” Markel, Jr., 69, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, January 2, 2018. He was the husband of Ruth A. (McKinsey) Markel to whom he was married for 29 years. A celebration of life tribute service will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday at Life Tributes by Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion with Pastor Terry Robinson officiating. Viewings will be held from 6-8:00 PM Friday and 12-1:00 PM Saturday at the Funeral Home. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Born December 8, 1948 in Fayetteville, AR a son of the late Dena C. (Osburn) and Elmer W. “Bud” Markel, Sr., he was a 1966 graduate of Red Lion Area High School. Following high school, Mr. Markel completed his HVAC apprenticeship at Borg Warner Corp. and worked at Caterpillar Inc., and later retired from Johnson Controls in 2013. Over the years Butch had coached Dallastown Cougar Football, played Susquehanna League baseball for Felton and also played semi-pro football with the York Lions. He was a member of Pleasant Grove UM Church, Indian River Boat Club in Millsboro, DE and AMVETS in Long Neck, DE. He loved spending his free time being around his family and working on cars in his garage. In addition to his wife, Butch is survived by a son, Lance A. Markel of Pittsburgh; a daughter, Shelly J. and husband Gary Bunch of Red Lion; two stepsons, Mickey S. and wife Cindy Smith of Edmond, OK and Jerry F. Smith and his companion Courtney Wright of York; six grandchildren, Ashli, Tori, Bridget, Dylan, Cole and Madisynn; one great grandson, Bo; and two sisters, Patricia Thompson of Dallastown and Pamela Markel of Red Lion.
