Elizabeth Ann Walters

Elizabeth Ann 'Betty' Walters, Pottsville, who took care of people for most of her life, died Oct. 3 at the age of 93. Born in Pottsville, March 6, 1920, she was a daughter of the late William and Jennie Raybould. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Roland, in 2008 after 65 years of marriage. The pair often sounded like they were doing a George Burns and Gracie Allen comedy routine of good-natured ribbing and banter born of a bond forged by decades of joys and struggles. She and Rol raised three sons, Roland Jr., William and Richard, but Betty also made a vocation of taking care of relatives who could no longer care for themselves. A child of the Great Depression, Betty quit school at age 16 after her mother died in order to take care of her father and three brothers, Benjamin, William and Harold. She would later take care of her father and brothers, William and Harold, while she raised her own family. After a rocky start of inedible pies, she became a terrific cook, known for her apple cake, potato salad, bean soup and spaghetti. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Pottsville. Betty delighted in her grandchildren, Kelly Brock and Billie, Brett, Evan, Ethan, Thomas and Daniel Walters; and great-grandchildren, Alexander Brock and Hannah Walters. Afflicted with Alzheimer's, Betty went to live at Schuylkill Manor, Pottsville, where she died. Surviving, in addition to her sons, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, are daughters-in-law, Donna Walters, wife of Bill, and Margaret Peterson, wife of Richard; her son Rol's former wife, Laura Walters; and Betty's sisters-in-law, Grace (Walters) Hilbert, and Doris (Walters) Gregor; nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 9:45 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, 330 W. Market St. Pottsville. Calling hours will be from 9 to 9:45 a.m. at the church. Interment will follow at 11:30 a.m. at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the First United Methodist Church of Pottsville, 330 W. Market St., Pottsville, PA 17901. Schlitzer Allen Pugh Funeral Home, Pottsville, has been entrusted with the arrangements.
