Eleanor Mcmillan

YORK - Mrs. Eleanor (Unser) McMillan, 85, died at 8:34 AM Monday, June 9, 2008 at Rest Haven Nursing and Rehabilitation Center-York. She was the wife of Dr. Wendell M. McMillan, who predeceased her on April 1, 2008. The couple would have celebrated their 62d wedding anniversary on July 14. Born April 14, 1923 in Far Hills, New Jersey, Mrs. McMillan was a daughter of the late Henry F. and Amalia (Kuhn) Unser. Until her marriage, she lived with her family in Bernardsville, New Jersey, graduating from Bernards High School. Mrs. McMillan was a homemaker in both the U.S. and overseas. She, her husband and their three children lived in Pennsylvania and Virginia. She supported and assisted her husband when his studies and career as an agricultural economist took the family to live in Denmark, Jordan, Afghanistan, Italy, Grenada, Barbados, Sudan and Syria. The couple resided in Arlington, VA until her husband's retirement in 1989, when they settled in York. Throughout her life, Mrs. McMillan pursued her interest in gardening and nature study, later earning certification as a Master Gardener. She was a Camp Fire Girls leader and was involved in similar community activities while her children were young. Mrs. McMillan also was an excellent and creative seamstress and exemplary cook. While she won various awards for her horticultural, sewing and cooking projects, she most enjoyed putting her knowledge to practical use, especially when living in countries where modern grocery and department stores were unavailable at the time. She was well-known for her common sense, resourcefulness, courage and forthrightness as well as her everlasting love for and support of her husband and children. Surviving Mrs. McMillan are daughter Susan R. McMillan of York; daughter Barbara (McMillan) Raid and husband Bill of York; son Douglas S. McMillan and wife Mary Anne of Harrisburg; grandson Jeffery D. Raid and wife Andrea of Columbia, MD; granddaughter Jennifer (Raid) Barto and husband Don of Elkridge, MD; and three great-grandchildren. She also is survived by her sister Agnes Unser and brother Leslie E. Unser, both of Bernardsville, NJ; her niece and great-niece Georga (Unser) and Heather Sutton of Gettysburg, SD; and her brother-in-law John W. McMillan and wife Norma of Carlisle, PA. Following cremation at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd., York, burial will be in Mt. Rose Cemetery. A private service will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) Hospice, 218 East Market Street, York, PA 17403, and will be very much appreciated.
