AVOCA-Edwin E. Bartush, 80, of Avoca, entered into eternal life on Saturday morning, December 4, 2010 at Mercy Hospice, Scranton. He was born on November 27, 1930 in Avoca, the son of the late Pauline (Zarkowski) and Andrew Bartush. Edwin graduated from Avoca High School in 1949. He was a life member of Ss. Peter and Paul Church, Avoca. Edwin was a retired U.S. Navy veteran who served his country for 20 years. He was extremely proud of his military service. He served on the USS Belmont where he obtained the rank of PO1. Edwin served in Korea and the Vietnam War. After his service in the Navy, Edwin worked for 20 years before retiring from the US Postal Service, where he served as a Maintenance Control Clerk. He was a life member of the VFW Post #8335, Avoca, the Polish American Citizens Club, Dupont, Fleet Reserve Assoc., Washington D.C. and the Disabled American Veterans. Edwin resided at the Gino J. Merli Veterans Center for the past 6 years. His family would like the staff, especially Mary, R.N., for their kindness and compassionate care. Edwin was preceded in death by his loving wife of 31 years, Marion L. (Hott) Bartush, who died on November 27, 2001. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, John, Anthony and Andrew, two sisters, Helen Voyack and Josephine Massakowski. He is survived by three sisters, Regina Bartush and Louise Bartush, both of Avoca, Joan Voyack, Pittston, two stepsons, John Hott, Florida, and Thomas Alford, Maryland, step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held on Tuesday at 9:00 am from Kniffen OMalley Funeral Home, Inc., 728 Main Street, Avoca, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 am in Ss. Peter and Paul Church, Avoca. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery with Military Honors conducted by the U.S. Navy. Father Phillip J. Sladicka will officiate. Friends may call on Monday at the funeral home from 5:00 to 8:00 PM In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Avoca Hose Company or the Avoca Ambulance Company, 740 Main Street, Avoca or the U.S.O., Naval Air station, Willow Grove, PA 19090
