DANVILLE - Edward J. Barry, 95, born on March 14, 1916 in Milton to Ida Isabelle (Wylie) and Edward J. Barry, passed away on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at the Emmanuel Nursing Center, Danville. He was the only son of five children. His sisters, Mary, Martha, Agnes and Dorothy all predeceased him. He was also predeceased by his wife Kathryn (Bergenstock) Barry and his daughter Carol Barry Patterson. Survivors include his son Edward James Barry, IV (Ruth) of Hammondsport, NY, five grandsons and 13 great-grandchildren. He was intensely proud of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and all of their accomplishments. Edward was a member of the 1933 class of Milton High School. By 1933, the Great Depression was underway and for several years, he lived in New York City. While in New York City, he sought employment and also became an amateur boxer. Eventually he moved back to Milton where he met and married Kathryn Irene Bergenstock on Christmas Eve, 1938. Kathryn predeceased him in March 1980. Over the course of his lifetime, Edward worked in a steel mill, drove a gasoline tanker for T.M. Miles Oil Company and owned and operated along with his wife a “Mom and Pop” corner store for 12 years in Milton. Mr. Barry was a life long active member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Milton and was a lay reader and member of the church council. During his retirement years, he was very active in AARP where he held various local and state offices. He also volunteered for 25 years at Geisinger Medical Center as a greeter and a chaplain. The funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 28, 2012 at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 100 Mahoning St., Milton, Pa 17847. Friends and acquaintances will be greeted by the family members one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Harmony Cemetery, Milton. The Reverend Cheryl L. Berner will officiate the services. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Edward’s name be made to the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. Arrangements are being handled by The Dale E. Ranck Funeral Service, 125 N. Front St., Milton, PA 17847.
