YORK – Edward J. Abendschoen, Jr., 94, passed away Monday, August 18, 2014 at York Hospital. He was the husband of Sharon E. Abendschoen and the late Mildred A. (Flinchbaugh) Abendschoen. A celebration of life tribute service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, August 23, 2014 at First St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 140 W. King St., York with his pastor, The Rev. James A. Driskell officiating. A viewing will be held from 10-11:00 AM Saturday at the Church. Burial will be in Otterbein Cemetery in Spry with a flag folding detail provided by York County Veterans Honor Guard. Life Tributes by Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion is in charge of arrangements. Born January 1, 1920 in York a son of Edward J. and Thelma J. (Brown) Abendschoen, he was a 19M37 graduate of William Penn Senior High School. Mr. Abendschoen retired as Vice President at Graybill’s Inc. He enjoyed golfing and being a private pilot. Ed earned the Barnstormer of the Year Award at the Hanover Airport on multiple occasions. He was a member of Aircraft Owners & Pilots Assoc., and former member of the Kiwanis Club and Lion’s Club. He was a US Navy veteran of WWII where he served in the South Pacific Theatre. Mr. Abendschoen is survived by three sons, Edward J. Abendschoen, III and wife Bonnie, Thomas J. Abendschoen, and Steven J. and wife Gretchen Abendschoen all of York; five grandchildren, Edward J. Abendschoen, IV, Geoffrey S., Hans C., and Marc A. Abendschoen, and Kristy L. Geesey; 11 great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; and three nieces. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, NY 10018 or to First St. John’s Lutheran Church, 140 W. King St., York, PA 17401.
