NEW COLUMBIA - Edith M. "Edie" (Gray) Hartley, 68, was called to the Lord suddenly on Thursday, February 08, 2007 at the Evangelical Community Hospital. She was the beloved wife of Robert T. Hartley. The couple was married on November 09, 1957. Edie was born on February 12, 1938, in Muncy, a daughter of the late Donald W. and Minerva A. (Reynolds) Gray. She was a member of the Friendship Baptist Church, McEwensville, for more than twenty-two years. Edie was a graduate of the Milton High School, where she was an award-winning pitcher on the softball team. She was employed as a bus driver for the Milton area for sixteen years, and as a food service helper in the Evangelical Hospital cafeteria for twelve years, where she was awarded the Employee of the Year Award (2000). She also worked for the C.S.I.U. Head Start Program for two years and with Albright Care Services as a caregiver for two years. Edie also helped out at her church with the Junior Church. She loved helping other anyway she could. She enjoyed traveling, having gone as far as Australia and New Zealand. Her real joy was her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Besides her husband, surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law James W. & Charlene Hartley of Turbotville and Theodore A. & Diane Hartley of New Columbia, and her daughter and son-in-law Dawn M. (Hartley) & James Zettlemoyer of New Columbia, and her son-in-law Lester G. Carr, Jr., of New Columbia. Edie is also survived by nine grandchildren, two great grandchildren, her brother Amos V. Gray of New York, and her sister Edwina Dieffenbach of New Columbia, as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter Minerva L. Carr (1999) and her sister Harriet Cotner (2000). Visitors had occasion to call for the viewing from 10:00 to 11:00 AM, on Monday, February 12, 2007 at the Friendship Baptist Church, McEwensville. The funeral was conducted at 11:00 AM at the church with her pastor, the Reverend Jerry L. Caswell officiating. Burial was in a private family cemetery at the Scenic View Farm in New Columbia. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Edie's memory were requested to the Friendship Baptist Church, 10 Voris Lane, Watsontown, PA 17777, or to the American Heart Association, 229 Center Street, Milton, PA 17847.
