POTTSVILLE-Earl J. Schafer, 91, formerly of Schuylkill Haven and a resident of Providence Place, Pottsville died Tuesday morning at Geisinger Medical Center. Born August 18, 1916, he was the son of the late George D. and Catherine (Schnorr) Schafer. He graduated from Hazleton High School in 1933. He attended Lafayette College, Easton, PA on a Scholarship and graduated with a BS degree in Mining and Metallurgical Engineering in 1937. Earl retired in 1977 after 38 years from ALCOA and in 1979 he returned to work for five years part time with Cressona Aluminum Company. Earl was a member of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, American Society of Metals and American Society for Quality Control. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Pottsville where he was President of the Board of Trustees, Chairman of the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee. He was a member and secretary for the Schuylkill Haven Municipal Authority for 20 years. His wife Jane J. (Norquest) Schafer died January 17 this year, and a sister Naomi Feist preceded him in death. Surviving is a daughter Judy S. Brehm, Ocean Springs, MS; a son Robert E Schafer, Schuylkill Haven, PA; two granddaughters Dr. Robyn Brehm-Germany, Denham Springs, LA; and Jennifer J. Breham, Ocean Springs, MS; two great-granddaughters Sarah and Victoria Germany, Denham Springs, LA. The Schlitzer-Allen-Pugh Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge of arrangements. Private funeral service will be conducted at the convenience of the family. The family would prefer remembrances in the form of contributions be sent to either the First United Methodist Church, 4th & West Market Streets, Pottsville, PA 17901; or to the American Red Cross, 1402 West Laurel Blvd., Pottsville, PA 17901.
