POTTSVILLE - Earl J. Murphy, 87, of Pottsville, passed away Monday at the home of his daughter Karen, surrounded by his family. Born in Minersville on March 12, 1924, he was a son of the late Laura Kessler Murphy. He attended Pottsville Area Schools and was a truck driver until he retired in 1988. A World War II veteran, he served aboard the USS Rall, DE-304, in the Pacific Theatre. He received a Purple Heart, a World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with three battle stars and a Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon. Preceding him in death were two brothers, Russell and Francis Murphy. He is survived by: his wife of 65 years, Jane Frankenstein Murphy; three sons, David, Steven and Kevin Murphy; three daughters, Karen Baskin, Janice Johnston and Michele Fries; a brother George Murphy, two sisters, Joan Murphy and Shirley Palster; grandchildren; great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. In keeping with Earl’s wishes, there will be no viewing. Interment will be at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville. The Schlitzer Allen Pugh Funeral Home, Inc., 6th & W. Market St., Pottsville, is handling the arrangements.
