YORK – Dr. Nathaniel W. Boyd, III, 91, died Thursday, October 11, 2012. Dr. Boyd was born in Philadelphia, PA on February 16, 1921. He was the son of the late Dr. Nathaniel W. Boyd, II and Daisy Dunkelberger Boyd, and the husband of the late Jane Leflar Boyd, whom he married in 1946. He graduated from Germantown High School, where he was captain of the track team and also a member of the swimming team. He then went to the University of Virginia, where he was the captain of the track team, and founded the UVA chapter of the national fraternity Sigma Delta Psi. He was the Middle Atlantic AAU Champion in both the high hurdles and the long jump. For four consecutive years he placed in the National AAU Championships in the decathlon, once placing third. Graduating in 1948 with his doctor’s degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, he came to York County, PA to complete a one year internship at West Side Osteopathic Hospital. He opened his private practice in 1949 in Loganville, PA. He attended the Dover Clinic in Boston, MA three times for post-graduate work in proctology, in which he specialized in 1952, drawing patients from as far away as Oregon, California and Alaska. Several doctors studied with him, learning his techniques throughout his 50 year practice. In 1976, he wrote the book, 'Stay Out of the Hospital.' He traveled as a hobby and went around the world several times. As a ship’s surgeon on a Grace Lines passenger ship, he traveled to South America. He enjoyed visiting doctors in various parts of the world practicing similar work to his own. He visited China, Japan, Australia, and Africa several times. As an owner of a classic Chris Craft speed boat for 25 years, he enjoyed the Susquehanna River with his friends and family. His wife and he enjoyed escaping winters to their Naples, FL condo. He also owned five coin-operated laundries over the years, two in York and three in neighboring communities. He is survived by his three children, Marilyn Boyd Silar, attorney Nathaniel W. Boyd, IV, both of York; and Elaine Boyd Douts of Sterling, VA; two grandsons and a granddaughter. He is also survived by a brother, Irvin B. Boyd of Fort Washington, PA. Dr. Boyd was a member of the Lafayette Club and the University Club of York. All services are private.
